OUT-2 Design was engaged to transform Nike’s Vietnam liaison office into a new, dynamic and supportive workspace for their expanding operations in Vietnam. To do this, our team embarked on a rigorous path of client engagement and briefing across all levels of the organization. Whilst detailed requirements were identified, documented and validated through an iterative and inclusive briefing process, a second stream of investigation into the core cultural drivers at Nike Vietnam identified the vision, key drivers and maxims that would serve as the guiding principles for the design of the new office.
Revitalizing Nike Vietnam: culturally driven workspace transformation
Innovating Nike's Corporate identity
The agreed approach was to embrace Nike’s current Corporate Identity while exploring opportunities to innovate and evolve the character of the office by leveraging the close collaboration Nike had with its manufacturing partners. This relationship was to be showcased through the intelligent integration of Nike product materials and technologies throughout the interior of the office.
Through consultation with Nike Stakeholders, product materials or technologies with relevance to their Vietnam operations were selected as the point of differentiation for each of the collaboration spaces distributed throughout the new office; spaces that were formal and informal, open and enclosed. In total, 26 different spaces were created to provide all staff with convenient access to a variety of spaces to support collaborative and team-oriented tasks.
Recognising the need to balance a high degree of teamwork with individual concentrated work, the menu of support spaces was expanded to include small 1-3 person ‘huddle rooms’ as well as standing ‘phone booths’ for ad-hoc private calls and teleconferences.
Tailoring collaboration spaces
Designing brand connection beyond borders
As the ‘The World’s Most Valuable Sports Brand’ Nike has a well-developed set of brand guidelines that serve a dual purpose of both establishing a very high minimum standard, as well as prescribing specific ‘rules’ as to the use of collateral. These rules mainly pertain to the correct use of logos, graphics and other branding elements. OUT-2 Design’s approach is to ‘responsibly challenge’ the accepted norms proposed by corporate design guidelines with the sole purpose of attaining new and better design solutions and brand connection.
We consider this to be particularly important in countries with different cultural values to the organisation’s head or founding country. Balancing local, international and organisational values and meaning through the design of space is an approach that we are deeply passionate about.
Reflecting Sport, Places, and Technology
We developed diverse menu collaboration spaces around three distinct themes: People in sport; Places where sport happens; and, Innovative Nike technologies (specifically used in Vietnam). These were then applied to specific support spaces distributed around the office, the theme selected for its relevance to the department that occupied the immediate workspace. The support spaces then serve as identifiable landmarks throughout the mostly open-plan office landscape.
